As said before, through time people have always claimed that the English language is getting worse. This is partly because of the way young people speak, they are liable to misuse the language, or not learn it properly in the first place, and the only way to fix it is to tighten language teaching at schools.
This is of course utter nonsense. There is no proof that today's children are any worse than the children of a century ago. In 1850, 40 percent of brides and grooms couldn't even write their own name. By 1900 this declined to 3 percent.
According to them, there was a Golden Age where children could write so much better, but when was it? Before the 1940's, people weren't guaranteed a secondary education, and after the 1970's the complaining started. Supposedly, the Golden Age was between those years then.
Only, there is something else happening. Right now, 30 percent of young people are in tertiary education, where the standards are much higher. There is simply being more expected of young people nowadays.
